Let me take this opportunity to pen down my 2 cents on Why, What, and How …. !!
Why Healthcare HR Folks in Hospitals are Need of the Time?
With its just 2nd year, International HR Day is still very much a toddler, so is our understanding of Healthcare HR Professionals. Gone are the days where Hospitals that used to function with just minimal intervention from the HR Department (or Compartment I would like to say). New India, amidst Covid-19 Pandemic, has shown us the importance of having a Holistic Health Care System in Society for its 360’ welfare. For any such system to succeed and sustain, it is imperative to have HR professionals who are given the center stage. For Hospitals which are pivotal to the care delivery system, be it public hospitals - for profit or not for profit hospitals, the need of having HR Professional is MUST, not an option. Mere presence is not enough, but overall sync of the Hospital’s vision and mission and its stakeholders (Employees, Patients, Relatives, Visitors, Associates, etc) is essential to have a culture of quality across the board. This can be achieved only through a dynamic HR team backed by Top Management.
What Healthcare HR Folks are capable of doing for Hospitals?
One Cadre of Professionals in Hospital which has organization-wide impact and can be the steering wheel for the organization then, without doubt, it is the Human Resource Professionals. They can, if supported holistically, bring about transformative change in the Hospitals and nurture them and be real enablers of sustained growth. It takes the right sort of attitude and core values in HR Professionals to lend them fuel to drive the change across the board. End result will be beautiful sync across roles and functions where everyone will contribute significantly and be part of the growth story of the Hospital.
How best Healthcare HR Folks can add and deliver value?
Being Healthcare HR is a super-specialized zone and very few get the opportunity to be on this spot where they can rightfully influence the Hospital Culture. Thank Almighty if you are one of them. If you are not one of them, do seek out if you’ve got a passion, the right attitude, and belief that New India has to be Healthier India first. From managing diverse skill-sets ranging from poorly literate care attendants to highly intelligent doctors and nurses, it takes more than HR professionals to manage such a diverse workforce. Empathetic HR Professional, and becoming a facilitator where a collaborative team approach is thoughtfully nurtured, has all the potential to contribute to building a workforce that delivers excellent patient care - directly or indirectly. Inculcating the Design Thinking Process is critical for succeeding as Healthcare HR Professional. Now is the time where Healthcare HR Professionals stop seeing the workforce based on its roles, responsibilities, KRAs, Depts, and Hierarchy and start seeing them as converging team players at the Patient Bedside and use this insight into their day to day work. Such a holistic approach will help Healthcare HR Professionals to have a meaningful impact on the way Hospital delivers patient care, every single day throughout the year.
This is the power of Healthcare HR. Go and unleash it, folks !!
